Nintendo Announces Raincheck Program for Hard-to-Find Wii Consoles

Nintendo announced [today ](http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/nintendo-sets-raincheck-program-address/story.aspx?guid=%7BFDF48C51-4E27-4D31-B822-498FB95FFBE0%7D)that it would be offering rainchecks to customers clamoring for one of the infamously hard-to-find Wii consoles. The Wii has enjoyed unrelenting popularity of late among gamers and “average Joes” alike, and despite nearly doubling production, Nintendo has been unable to keep up with demand.
The Wii has continued to outsell its biggest competitors in the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, and with sales up 89 percent in November, Nintendo made the call to offer consumers a consolation prize of sorts. Teaming up with gaming retailer Game Spot, the company is offering Wii rainchecks for purchase on December 20 and 21. Consumers with valid rainchecks can expect a “Wii Guarantee,” with a unit guaranteed to them by the end of January, something that may console eager children come Christmas morning.
Some skeptics are arguing that Wii’s shortage problems are the fault of Nintendo, claiming the company is attempting to game consumers and increase its own brand buzz by creating false demand. This raincheck offer may or may not quell the critics, but will no doubt lead to increased sales.
