The Library of Congress Recruits Flickr Users

The Library of Congress has launched a pilot program that will rely on Flickr users to tag over three thousand just-released vintage photographs. Two groups of images are included in the pilot project, a Great Depression era series, and photographs centering on early 1900’s news events in New York City.
The goal, representatives say, is to expand access to images and just the collective wisdom of the masses to accurately catalog images. While much of the blogosphere is praising the effort, some cynics suggest that pointless clutter from many Flickr users who do not take the project seriously will limit the project’s success.
