Yahoo! Signs on with OpenID

The dream of a universal Internet user ID took a step closer to reality when Yahoo recently announced its intention to support the OpenID platform. OpenID is a decentralized service that will allow any user to use a singular login in for any participating website. However, Yahoo’s move does come with a catch – the tech giant will initially not allow users of third-party OpenID participants to log in to Yahoo with those accounts. Although, according to Michael Arrington, Yahoo does plan to “move in that direction.”
The announcement is significant because of Yahoo’s massive user base, which reportedly totals 248 million – more than twice the existing number of OpenID accounts. In total, about 9,000 sites are already participating. Yahoo is expected to link user accounts to OpenID in public beta testing on January 30.
