Kaspersky Lab, a computer security company, has discovered what is believed to be the first case of hackers using Twitter in an attempt to gain access to personal computers. The incident in question involves a Twitter account that appears to be disguised as spam. Curious onlookers who click through on advertised links will be prompted to download video software that is embedded with malware.
Kaspersky Labs suggests that Twitter users tend to be more trusting and therefore more likely to click on these links. Ryan Naraine points out that setting this up is an easy process for hackers, and others are warning Twitter users to be more careful about who they follow.
