Measurement Month: a History and Outline of Events

When most people think of September, they usually associate it with the changing seasons or the beginning of a new school year. Professionals in the PR and communication industries, however, relate it with Measurement Month. Every September, the International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC) hosts Measurement Month to promote and share the importance and usefulness of media monitoring and measurement.

AMEC was founded in London by a group of seven members in 1996. In the twenty years since its founding, it has expanded rapidly. The association now has members in approximately 48 countries throughout the world. Their members include PR agencies, media organizations, and monitoring companies.

As a trade association for the PR and communication industries, AMEC aims to provide educational opportunities and specialized development to professionals. Additionally, the association conducts research, sets best practice standards, and promotes advancement of the industry. For example, AMEC recently premiered their new Integrated Evaluation Framework, a comprehensive reference for communication and PR professionals. The framework is an interactive, online tool that guides users through the measurement process, which allows them to plan and measure effectively.

Each year, Measurement Month is one of AMEC’s most significant contributions to the fields of measurement and PR. Measurement Month operates as a series of events that focus on the significance and functionality of PR measurement. These events, which take place both digitally and physically on a global scale, include seminars, webinars, podcasts, workshops, and panel discussions. This year, AMEC will dedicate each week of Measurement Month to specific regions, Europe, Asian Pacific, America, and Middle East/International chronologically.

As a part of its continued mission to provide quality, comprehensive media intelligence, CARMA supports and participates in Measurement Month. CARMA, as well as Media Bullseye, has several events planned as a part of Measurement Month, including Jennifer Zingsheim Phillips’ weekly posts about measurement challenges, future predictions, and tools, a webinar about measurement tips, and podcast discussions with measurement experts. Later this week, at 12:00 PM on Thursday September 8, CARMA’s CEO Mazen Nahawi, North American CEO Chip Griffin, and Media Bullseye’s Jennifer Zingsheim Phillips participate as panelists on the #MeasurePR Twitter Chat.
