The Society for New Communications Research, a global nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of new communications, has announced its 2007 Excellence in New Communications Award Winners. According to the announcement, the “awards honor the work of individuals, corporations, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and media outlets that are pioneering the use of social media, ICT, mobile media, online communities, virtual worlds and collaborative technologies in the areas of media, marketing, public relations, advertising, entertainment, education, politics and social initiatives.”
Corporate honors were bestowed on ten companies, including Dell, General Motors, and the Scuderi Group (along with its communications firm Topaz Partners), among others who all received awards of excellence at the annual SNCR Awards Dinner and Gala on December 5. Also among the honorees was Coca-Cola, recognized for its achievement in viral video alongside Eepybird, the group responsible for a YouTube video featuring the effects of Diet Coke when mixed with Mentos mints. Ten more companies also picked up awards of merit for blogging, including HP and Microsoft.
Awards in several other categories were also given, including excellence in education, and for non-profit campaigns, where Converseon picked up honors for its Second Chance Trees campaign designed to help save endangered trees. The campaign took place entirely in Second Life, where participants purchased a virtual tree that was planted in real life.
