It is no secret that Google is making a major push into the wireless industry. The search king’s interest in the upcoming spectrum auction is well documented, as is its effort to develop an open mobile platform. Today, Google made a relatively small, but concrete step forward by releasing a series of applications specifically tailored for the Apple iPhone. Owners of the popular device can now take advantage of redesigned Gmail and other Google applications that are said to be faster and easier to use on the iPhone.
Like most Google and/or Apple related news, this [story](http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9849352-7.html) is generating a lot of chatter inside the blogosphere, and many [speculate](http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=7580) that this is just the tip of the iceberg. We don’t yet know if the applications themselves will warrant the hype, but we can say that this story is far from over.
