A recently launched website devoted to salacious gossip on college campuses had students, administrators, and parents wondering how far the boundaries of free speech can be stretched. The site, JuicyCampus.com, allows users to anonymously post messages to their schools discussion boards — messages that may be harmful to the reputation of their subjects.
According to a report from MSNBC, students to have been victims of some of the more vicious gossip from the site are calling for university administrators to ban the website from campus computers, raising questions about censorship and free speech. If they spoke group has also been created calling for members to continue to fight for a ban on the site. Administrators are quick to point out that even if they were able to ban the site from campus computers, it would still be easily accessible from off-campus.
For his part, the site’s creator calls any attempts to ban the website censorship, and highlights the benefits of the “free exchange of ideas.”
