Whistleblower site ordered offline by California court

by Jen Zingsheim on February 19, 2008

The whistleblower site WikiLeaks.org was ordered to shut down last week by a judge in U.S. District Court in San Francisco. Specifically, the judge ordered the domain registrar, Dynadot LLC, to deactivate the account. The site exposes alleged money laundering, tax evasion, and other illegal activities by posting confidential and internal documents from whistleblowers.
A Swiss banking firm was the target of recent posts, and the banking group–Julius Baer–sought relief through the courts and was first awarded a permanent injunction. The court quickly reconsidered the motion and amended the order shortly thereafter, issuing a temporary restraining order instead. A hearing on the case is scheduled for Friday, February 29 at the U.S. District Court.
