A serious flaw in the Internet’s Domain Name System protocol has just been patched in what is being called the “largest synchronized security update in the history of the Internet.” The flaw opened the door for hackers to create “massive” disruptions by redirecting Internet traffic.
Microsoft has officially labeled the flaw “important,” the second most severe level in a four-step system. Specific details have been held back in an effort to limit potential attacks. Researchers insist that this is a particularly severe vulnerability, which is why so many vendors quickly agreed to implement patches today. More complete details are expected to be made public at the Black Hat 2008 event early next month.
