Unlimited iTunes?

Unlimited iTunes?

According to some reports, Apple is in talks with record labels regarding the possibility of offering access to the entire iTunes music library for a one-time (to be determined) payment, rather than the current model that allows users to purchase songs one at a time for 99 cents each. The move is similar to plans offered by some other mp3 providers, including Nokia, according to a report in technology blog Ars Technica.

Apple is considering a one-time $20 payment for access to iTunes for the duration of an iPod or iPhone’s life, while labels think an $80 fee (allegedly what Nokia charges for lifetime access) is more appropriate. The Ars Technica report urges caution with any enthusiasm over the plan, due to the complex nature of negotiating with record companies and labels for access to their content.
